Deltaville a town in Chesapeake Bay is a small town that has more boats than residents. The estimate is 800 people and 2500 boats! It's considered a great yachting, fishing and crabbing. The marina was quite nice with the usual amenities including use of courtesy cars.
This morning we took a 30 mile trip across hugh Chesapeake Bay to a group of isolated islands. During the trip we had to avoid 100s of crab traps and a lot of large professional fishing and crabbing boats; plus one big navy destroyer. We had calm seas to begin with, turning into 3 to 5 foot waves (we are very happy for the way the boat handles).
The island we visited is Smith Island which is part of a remote group that hs seemed to stand still in time.
Because of their isolation their language still has traces of old english dating back to when the islands were settled in the early 1700s.
A boat delivers their mail and then becomes a school boat. The boat also acts as a taxi.
Cars made their appearance on the islands after the 2nd world war.
electricity arrived in 1949. Their grocery store makes 7 - 11 look like a Walmart!
Their main industries are crabbing, fishing, and tourism.
