Day one on the Erie Canal

entering a lock

One of many waterfalls

Getting ready for the race

lots of boating and fishing in the wilds

Our dock at Riverlink Park in Amsterdam NY
This was a busy day for locking.  We went through a series of 6 locks each one raising the boat about 35 ft.  The locks were  very close to each other so as to actually hold  a world record for the quickest ascent to a level of 265 ft according to a lock master.  These guys are generally really helpful and friendly and will go out of their way to help solve a problem for you.  After those 6 we went through 4 more locks.  All 10 were within 35 miles. The scenery was beautiful with lots of trees looking much like the Michigan or Wisconsin northwoods.  The weather was cloudy with some rain thrown in.
Our marina was in the city of Amsterdam and was actually part of a very pretty park.
We sent out for pizza, washed the boat and wrote the blog.
Tomorrow we go through 7 more locks as we travel west on the Erie Canal.
